RadicalxChange Foundation

RadicalxChange Foundation is an international nonprofit and movement, founded by economist E. Glen Weyl in 2018 following public discussion of his book Radical Markets: Uprooting Capitalism and Democracy for a Just Society (with Eric Posner). It grew from roughly fifty volunteers into a foundation that convened its first major conference in Detroit in March 2019.12

The foundation champions Plurality: a philosophy, and a book by Weyl and Audrey Tang — Taiwan's former Digital Minister — that treats technology as a means of cooperating across difference, rather than a force flattening human agency out of decision-making.3

Mechanisms

RadicalxChange's best-known contributions are two voting/funding mechanisms devised by Weyl:

  • Quadratic voting — lets participants express the intensity of a preference, not just its direction, by spending a budget of "voice credits" whose cost per vote rises quadratically.
  • Quadratic funding — a matching-funds formula for allocating public or philanthropic money toward public goods, weighting the number of contributors over the size of any single contribution.

Together with Plural Ownership and Plural Money, the foundation packages these as "the Plural Stack." Prototypes have been deployed in Colorado, Nashville, New York, the UK, Brazil, and Sydney.3

National-scale adoption

Two examples are cited as evidence the ideas move beyond pilots:

  • Taiwan — quadratic-style civic tech and Pol.is-based deliberation (see vTaiwan) informed by Audrey Tang, co-author of Plurality.
  • Japan — Team Mirai, a party citing the Plurality framework, won parliamentary seats in the 2026 election.3

RadicalxChange's Melbourne chapter is newly forming. A public launch event — "An invitation to meet RadicalxChange Foundation in Melbourne," hosted with Small Giants Academy and Today — is scheduled for 27 August 2026.6 Jess Scully's connection to Melbourne runs through Small Giants Academy's Wisdom & Action Forum (May 2026), where Audrey Tang also spoke.7
